I am writing you today to ask your support of the S 2420 Federal Food Donation Bill, co-sponsored by Senators Chuck Schumer and Richard Lugar. This important Bill requires executive agencies that serve food on-premise to encourage the donation of excess food to local non-profit organizations, protecting the agencies and their contractors from liability while helping over 43,000 soup kitchens and food pantries on the front line in the hunger battle.
Over 95 billion pounds of food are wasted each year. That is enough to feed all who suffer from hunger in our country. Countless organizations already have pledged to help - rock bands, sports teams, and hundreds of schools currently feed the hungry with their leftovers. Our Federal Government can help feed millions more each month by allowing and encouraging food rescue efforts within the walls of its agencies, while also serving to help save our environment by diverting food from landfills.
Now is the time to make a difference in the fight against poverty. Each meal that does not have to be purchased by hunger-battling organizations, aggregates to millions of dollars that can be spent on social workers, tutors, job placement counselors or psychologists that all can help fight against the root causes of poverty.
